Your family’s faith is not limited to just the four walls of a church on a Sunday, or how many times you read through the Bible. It’s something your family lives, day in and day out.
Finding ways to organically weave faith into everyday family life can feel overwhelming to get everyone on the same page, to speak to everyone’s individual personalities, or to come up with newer faith practices.
But coming up with new ideas doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are some fresh, practical ideas for family faith practice:
1. A Real Rest Day Each Week
This isn’t a new concept - but it’s foreign in today’s society. In a world that prizes busyness, rest can be revolutionary. Setting aside intentional rest isn’t just good for the body, it’s a spiritual practice.
Choose one evening a week where your family intentionally rests together—no screens, no schedules, no productivity.
Try It:
- Pick the same night every week (consistency > perfection)
- Turn off TVs, phones, and tablets
- Dim the lights or light a candle to signal “this time is different”
- Choose one simple activity like:
- Reading a short passage of Scripture
- Praying together
- Engaging in conversation together about your week (highs, lows, etc.)
In a culture that celebrates busyness, choosing rest is a spiritual act. Slowing down teaches children that rest isn’t laziness—it’s trust. True rest creates space to reconnect with God and one another in ways constant noise never allows.
2. One Intentional Way to Use Technology for Faith
Instead of saying you’re just going to try and avoid technology altogether, use it on purpose as a family to connect, grow deeper and push further into your faith.
Try It:
- Watch a short devotional or Bible story video together before dinner
- Play a faith-based podcast during school drop-offs or car rides
- Use an age-appropriate Bible app once or twice a week as a family
Technology isn’t the enemy, unintentional use is. Teaching kids how to use digital tools for good helps them develop discernment, not dependency, and shows them that faith can be woven into everyday life.
3. The “Travel Time” Practice
Get more out of your drive time by turning them into moments of reflection and share how you’ve seen God at work.
How to Try It:
- Ask one simple question:
- “Where did you see God this week?”
- “What are you thankful for right now?”
- Share a “quick spiritual win” - maybe something you’ve been asking God for or praying for that has come to fruition.
Faith grows when it’s talked about naturally. This practice helps children learn to recognize God’s presence in ordinary moments and creates space for honest conversations without pressure.
4. A Simple Family Fast Anyone Can Try
When most people think about fasting, they imagine something extreme, like a water fast or a 21-day church fast. Because of that, we often miss the opportunity to fast as a family.
Choose one small thing your family will step away from together for a set time.
Try It:
- Fast from social media for a weekend
- Skip dessert one night and pray together instead
- Replace one TV night with prayer or conversation
Fasting doesn’t have to be extreme to be meaningful. When families fast together, children learn dependence on God, self-discipline, and the value of seeking Him intentionally—especially during seasons of decision or prayer.
These practices aren’t new, but practicing them together is what makes them powerful.
Instead of fighting the digital world, teach your children how to use and steward it well. Instead of fasting alone, invite your family into the process. And instead of treating rest as optional, reclaim it as a biblical command.
These small and consistent practices are sure to deepen not only your individual faith but strengthen your faith as a family along the way. You’re seeking God, you’re being obedient to some of his commands, and you’re taking back practices that can be used for His glory and righteousness.
A Practical Start to Faith Building
Our mission is to equip families to move to a biblical theology and trajectory in their lives. In doing this, the organic progression of faith building is crucial. But how do you mix the two and not get overwhelmed? Family and faith, faith and family. Sometimes taking care of your own individual relationship with God feels like all you can juggle.
We want to take the weight of that off of your family with The 7 Generation Family Legacy Study. This course was designed to help walk your and your family through a renewed understanding and a shift of what is family in a biblical context. You’ll learn the importance of values, cast a family vision, and take back the intentionality of family. Let’s get started!
