Strategies for Your Family Mission Statement

Having helped hundreds of families build their own mission statements, these are some of the defining traits we see in the most effective family mission statements.

  • Easy to Remember: Something unique we noticed about families who kept practicing their mission statements was we’d usually receive videos from them of their children rattling off the mission statement. It became a consistent theme that if it was short and simple to recite, it also became simple to live out. Under 7 words is usually a good benchmark.
  • Easy to Act On: If you want your family to actually use the mission statement you create, it needs to be clear in its application. You don’t need to include all the possibilities, but look for the phrases that give you the clearest picture of the types of actions your family will take.
  • Easy to Connect to Vision: A family mission statement is more than rules without context; it should be your tool for how you accomplish the bigger picture vision of your family together. A good mission statement isn’t done in isolation, but rather it gives the path forward for what you want to accomplish.

For example, a family with a vision to “be a multi-generational family bearing the fruit of God’s love” might set a mission statement to “live as disciples through faith, love, and service.” Mission gives clarity on how you make progress.

Make Your Christian Family Mission Statement Your Own

While a mission statement might set your daily actions and standards of behavior, it still can create hope for your family. Having a clear path towards success can feel encouraging and even relieving as a family.

Sit down with your family and brainstorm together the lists of actions that connect to those strategies above. Make sure you all are clear on your vision to help guide the process.
