Age-Appropriate Family Prayers at Christmas

Age-Appropriate Family Prayers at Christmas

Before the wrapping paper flies and the Christmas dinner cools, take a moment to gather around something important: prayer

This quick guide will help your family prayers at Christmas feel like each person is included, no matter their age. So find a couple of prayers for each age group below and bring them with you into your holidays:

Family Prayer at Christmas: For Young Children (Under 10)

Young children experience Christmas with curiosity and wonder. Keep the prayers simple so that they can easily connect the excitement of the season to the reason for it.

These young child-friendly prayers invite them to talk to God in their own way:

  • “Jesus, thank You for being born. I’m happy it’s Your birthday today.”
  • “Thank You for my family and for all the fun we get to share at Christmas.”
  • “Help me to be kind and gentle, even when I get excited or forget.”
  • “Thank You for the warm, happy things about Christmas… like lights, songs, and Your love.”

Family Prayer at Christmas: For Teens (11–17)

For teens, Christmas and real-life are still at a delicate balance. It can be a time of mixing joy, questions, stress, and self-discovery. These prayers give them space to reflect on who Jesus is and who they’re becoming as another year begins.

  • “God, thank You for sending Jesus. Please help me make sense of what You want for my life.”
  • “When I feel overwhelmed or unsure, give me steady ground to stand on and wise choices to make.”
  • “Help me trust You when life feels confusing, and help me see You at work around me.”
  • “Teach me to show love and patience to the people I care about, even when the season feels busy or complicated.”

Family Prayer at Christmas: For Young Adults

Young adulthood often brings new responsibilities; careers, relationships, and sometimes the early steps of building a family. Christmas can be a meaningful moment to pause and ask God for direction, stillness and true peace and rest in Him.

  • “Father, thank You for Jesus and for giving me a place in Your story. Help me lead my life, and my home, with wisdom that comes from You.”
  • “Show our family how to stay connected and supportive of each other as we celebrate Christmas and look toward the year ahead.”
  • “Shape our home into a place where Your love is felt, Your Word is honored, and Your truth guides us even when life is noisy.”
  • “Walk with me as I make decisions that shape my future. Help me raise my family with grace, strength, and an honest love for You.”

Family Prayer at Christmas: For Parents & Grandparents

Parents and grandparents carry memories, traditions and stories from many Christmases. Christmas offers a moment to thank God for His faithfulness and to speak blessing over the generations that follow.

  • “Lord, thank You for Your steady love through every season of my life. Seeing my family gathered reminds me of Your goodness.”
  • “Give me words that build up and encourage the next generation, so they feel supported and guided by Your truth.”
  • “Fill our home with peace as we celebrate Jesus’ birth—peace that lasts beyond this day.”
  • “Help the legacy I leave behind reflect Your values and Your heart, and may it point my children and grandchildren toward the hope we have in Christ.”

Traditions Are a Remembered Practice

Allow these family prayers at Christmas - calling people out specifically by their age and stage of life - to become a natural rhythm with intentionality, and transform into traditions over time. Remember, traditions are practices and repetition over time.

So no matter the age, prayer during Christmas is a powerful starting point to connect with God and with each other. By adapting and recognizing prayers to each stage of life, families can reflect long after the season ends.

This Christmas, consider starting a new tradition: a family prayer time where everyone, young and old, shares a simple prayer from the heart. Allow people to do it at their pace. Make sure to create space for people who aren’t ready yet to be praying and that’s okay- maybe you then adapt your tradition to everyone writing down a heartfelt prayer for a specific person.
