What’s the Importance of Family in the Bible?
Through the Bible, there are many stories of families and their triumphs and failures that provide many lessons for us today. However, when you start...
As you lead your family, having a clear biblical standard can make all the difference, so let’s talk about what standard God has set. Families are one of God’s original tools for redemption (read more about this biblical purpose here) so understanding the traits that should shape families based on this purpose are important.
In Psalm 145, there is a simple formula woven into the verses of what a biblical family is. Verses 4-7 say:
One generation commends your works to another;they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—and I will meditate on your wonderful works. They tell of the power of your awesome works—and I will proclaim your great deeds. They celebrate your abundant goodnessand joyfully sing of your righteousness.
From that passage, here are a few of the basics to identify of what it looks like for your family to be walking from what God intended:
It’s central to what they do on a regular basis. For your family’s practical application, there are a variety of ways you can do this. It should involve intentional repetition and practices to articulate what matters, but it also is in the daily aspects of life. How you live, the rhythms and behaviors, also helps set the standard. (Read more about those principles here.)
They share stories that point back to God’s work. God is the source of strength and joy for families, and their words continually point back to this. It also means that God lives as the point of authority in their lives. Family isn’t about bringing glory to ourselves but bringing honor to Him.
We tend to miss this trait since it can be brushed aside as “less meaningful” but it actually is a key practice. It ties back to the previous two traits because it is an intentional practice where we are sharing what matters and honoring God, but it also just is a powerful reminder that God created us for joy. We need those moments to pause, recognize all God has done, and soak in the joy.
Now that you have these basic traits of a biblical family, you can start to go deeper with how you apply these things. What does your celebration practice look like? What are the things you want to pass on to next generations? How will you share stories regularly of what God has done?
Invite your family into the process and you will be well on your way to walking in biblical principles and finding a more joyful path.
