7 Verses on Family: God’s Perspective for Generations

When God created the institution of family, He had long-term purpose in mind. Explore these verses on family for greater perspective into what God intended for your family and a renewed generational purpose.

1. Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)

"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old, they will not turn from it."

This verse emphasizes the importance of guiding and nurturing children in a way that aligns with God's teachings. Instilling values and faith in the younger generation can have a lasting impact if we are intentional with this.

2. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV)

"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."

In this passage, Moses sets up a daily rhythm for the Israelites to immerse their daily lives with God's commandments and to actively share these teachings with their children. It was a simple practice to instill God’s word and it carried on for generations.

3. Joshua 24:15b (NIV)

"But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."

Joshua's declaration reflects a commitment to prioritize God in the family, and you see that commitment lived out through the rest of his story. God’s blessing is also clear from Joshua’s faithful commitment, and his life can serve as an example of the power of setting the direction for your family.

4. Psalm 145:4 ESV

"One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts."

As a key verse at Legacy Stone, this verse highlights the purpose God has for generations; we were made to glorify Him. As each generation testifies to God’s greatness, it becomes a faith that lasts for generations.

5. Psalm 103:17-18 (NIV)

"But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children—with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts."

This passage emphasizes the enduring nature of God's love and righteousness, extending not only to the current generation but also to the children and grandchildren of those who follow His ways. God desires faithfulness across generations.

6. Joel 1:3 (NIV)

"Tell it to your children, and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generation."

In Joel 1, the book opens talking about a plague of locusts and it commands the Israelites to not forget. It is a sobering reminder, and Joel wanted to ensure families knew to pass on the story and the lesson. This is part of God’s plan for families to pass on His wisdom and to be able to share hope through how redemption is played out.

7. Isaiah 59:21 (NIV)

"As for me, this is my covenant with them," says the Lord. "My Spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants—from this time on and forever," says the Lord.

God's covenant promises are intended not only for the current generation but for their children and descendants. This verse emphasizes the continuity of God's presence and Word throughout multiple generations.
