5 Examples of New Family Traditions

Family traditions don’t have to look exactly as they once did to carry the same meaning. Sometimes, life’s seasons call for renewal - a fresh way to honor the values and connections that have shaped us. Traditions can evolve while still preserving their heart, whether it’s through new activities, modern adaptations, or intentional gatherings.

1. “The Family Blessing Battle”

Gather your family together for a blessing battle! Instead of competing against each other, the goal is to outdo one another with encouragement. Each person takes turns speaking words of encouragement and blessing over another family member.

Consider using a timer, cheer after each blessing, and give a silly prize to the most creative encouragement.

2. “Mission Mondays”

Every Monday morning, your kids wake up to a top-secret mission waiting for them in the fridge. Their mission? To spread kindness and God’s love in a fun, unexpected way!

Ideas:

• Tape a Bible verse and candy to a neighbor’s door.
• Leave an encouraging note in a sibling’s backpack.
• Call Grandma and ask how you can pray for her.
• Encourage them to sit with someone new at school. 

Use creative license! Play “Mission Impossible” music, and let them report back at dinner on how their mission went.

3. “The Glow-in-the-Dark Prayer Walk”

One night a month, grab some glow sticks, bundle up if it’s chilly, and head outside for a glow-in-the-dark prayer walk!

How it works:

• Give each kid a glow stick and assign them something to pray for at different stops (i.e., neighbors, teachers, family, people driving by).

At the end of each day, gather as a family and share “God Sightings”, the little moments where you saw God at work.

• Let kids “hunt” for God's presence throughout the day (answered prayers, acts of kindness, beautiful flowers in a field or a sunset).
• Keep a “God’s Treasure” jar and write each sighting on a slip of paper.
• Once a month, read through them together and celebrate how God is moving in your family!

5. "Letters Through Time"

If you have older children, here’s a creative way to reflect and speak encouragement into their lives.

Letters Through Time is a meaningful family tradition where, once a year, each family member writes a letter to another family member with whatever God has put on their heart to share. But here’s the twist: the letters aren’t opened until the following year on the exact same date.

How It Works:

1. Choose a Date: Pick a special day such as New Year’s, Christmas, a family gathering, or a unique family anniversary.
2. Write a Letter: Each family member writes a letter to another member of the family (you can rotate who writes to whom each year or draw names like Secret Santa).
3. Mail or Store the Letters: The letters are sealed and either mailed or stored in a family “time capsule” box.
4. Receive Last Year’s Letter: On that same date the following year, each person receives and reads the letter written to them one year earlier.
