As James 2 reminds us, “Faith without works is dead.” A mission statement that doesn’t show up in real life? Same story. Let’s explore four intentional, fun activities you can use with your kids to put your values in motion, starting today.
Let’s capture 5 purposeful activities to get your family started. These are designed to put your mission in motion and practice what you preach (or at least, what you’ve written down, for a mission statement).
Pick random (or intentional) days, times, or scenarios where you pop quiz your kids about your mission. Stick your head in their room and say “Pop quiz, can you state our family mission?” Or turn down the music in the car on the way to school in the morning and ask, “Who can tell me our family mission statement first?”.
Sit down with your calendar as a family. Talk through your current schedule. For each activity, ask: “Does this keep us in line with our mission?”
Decide together what to keep, what to cut, and what boundaries to draw moving forward. Let the mission drive your commitments.
Once a week, sit around the table (with your mission statement in hand and ready) and go one by one: "What’s one area where I lived our mission well this week? What’s one place I struggled?"
This will help not only your kids but your spouse model what it looks like to reflect, admit, and reset.
This purposeful activity includes picking one word in your mission statement, studying it and practicing it together.
Choose the word as a family. Vote together on which one you’ll pick.
Everyone should choose their own ways they’ll practice that word this week- one should be outside of the home and one way should be practiced in your family.
Pick one night to discuss what makes that word meaningful, look up its definition, and find scriptures that go with it.
