3 Ways to Use a Family Mission Statement for Back to School

The back to school season brings a mix of emotions with it, especially for your kids. There can be a tension of anxiety and excitement about what the year will bring.

The truth is the year will likely hold both obstacles and challenges, and also wonderful new experiences, friendships, and growth. Through all of it, a family mission statement can help everyone, especially your kids, stay anchored when the highs and lows arrive.

Simply put, a family mission statement answers one simple question: “What should our family actually do  to reflect who God has called us to be?” It keeps you anchored together and also guides you forward in practical ways.

Here are three specific ways that your family mission statement can support your kids and family as you head into the school year.

3 PRACTICES FOR YOUR FAMILY TO USE YOUR FAMILY MISSION STATEMENT

A family mission statement gives your kids a solid foundation to come back to so they know what actions set the standard. Shaped by a shared set of values, a mission reminds them what matters most to your family and keeps them grounded when the school day pulls them in a hundred different directions.

The biggest downfall of a mission statement is when it’s not relevant to your family’s daily life. Making it practical comes down to small details. Here are three ways to make sure yours stays a part of how your family actually lives.

PRACTICE 1: REPEAT YOUR FAMILY MISSION STATEMENT TOGETHER

Your family mission statement is how you live out what matters most to you in your words and actions. It’s your guide through daily life. When you repeat your family mission statement, it keeps your family aligned on what’s most important to you.

With younger kids, saying your mission statement out loud, like in the car on the way to school, is a great practice for repetition, and with older kids, practicing it around the dinner table together can help make it part of your routine.

PRACTICE 2: IDENTIFY HOW TO PUT YOUR MISSION IN ACTION

A mission statement becomes more real when it’s lived out. Set a practice to ask your kids to identify one way they will live it out. This challenge will help them start to show how they will make the family mission statement their own.

For younger kids, this could be questions like:

  1. How are you going to show kindness to another person at school today?

  2. What’s one way you can be honest, even when it feels hard?

For older kids, these questions could go a bit deeper:

  1. When you feel pressure to go along with the group, how will you decide what’s right?

  2. Where might you have a chance to stand up for someone who needs it?

Make sure to set a simple check-in at the end of the week to talk through how it went. These intentional questions help your kids turn your family mission statement from words into habits.

PRACTICE 3: USE YOUR FAMILY MISSION STATEMENT AS A DECISION FILTER

Kids face a steady stream of decisions at school, from who to become friends with to how to speak up when something feels off. Teach them to use the mission statement as a filter, a way to pause and ask whether a choice lines up with the principles of your mission.

Role-play a few scenarios like these at home so the habit feels familiar before they need it:

  1. A friend asks you to keep a secret that feels uncomfortable.

  2. A new student is sitting alone at lunch.

  3. A classmate is being made fun of and others are laughing along.

Hear from them first, and then walk through together how the mission statement could shape each response. The goal is for your kids to walk away with confidence of how to apply it to decisions on their own.

STAY INTENTIONAL TOGETHER

Living out your mission statement takes intention as a family. Think of it as building muscle: the more your family returns to it, the stronger it gets. It eventually becomes that anchor that your kids can return to in changing seasons, and it’s something that you can start implementing at the start of this one.
